Thoughts on Writer's Block

I've never actually experienced writer's block. I have run out of energy on a novel and had to shelve it. It is still sitting on the shelf, but only because I moved on with other projects and haven't gotten back to it. I have also run out of energy for revising a piece, but I can usually slog through the revision process if I make myself.

Recently, I have been working on two screenplays, and with both I've hit spots where I had to stop. In both cases, it was because the upcoming… Continue

Organic Screenwriting

Way on back when I was in college (UNC-CH Class of '77), or soon thereafter, I saw a copy of Esquire and on the cover was a photo of a monkey at a typewriter, surrounded by stacks of screeplays. The headline was something like "Is anyone out there not writing a screenplay?" At the time, I was trying to write my first screenplay, High Cotton. And that Esquire article made me realize the futility of my efforts, if I expected to get anywhere with it. In fact, I did not get anywhere, and I… Continue

I missed being on the mountain this year. (You can't imagine how much!) I had family issues I had to deal with this year, so couldn't get away this summer. Boy, do I need a vacation. I hope you've been finding time for your writing along with this huge project you've undertaken.

Hey nice to be here. Wherever here is? I'm a big fan of Hemingway, Fitzgerald, Remarque (All's Quiet on Western Front), Sherwood Anderson, Thomas Wolf, Sinclair Lewis. Hopefully I didn't forget anyone. I'd apoligize to them personally but then I guess there's no need.

Dear Les, Susan,
Life is treating me about the same as I treat it, as has long been the case. Betty, however, had to get a new knee in July and only this week has she begun to be free of pain and to be a bit more mobile. Hannah was merciful when she came through Washington, NC and did not damage our boat, thank God. That's about it since Wildacres. We hope all goes well at your house.

Hi, Les. Sorry not to write or call before now. My aunt that I look after broke her hip a few weeks ago, and that has occupied so much of my time. Maybe I can call you tonight after I visit her this afternoon.

Love to Susan and you,

Hi Les,

You can send a note about to the Maryland Writer's Association's e-newswire. I think that will get the word out to many writers in my area. The person to contact is Kim Williams. She can be reached at Tell her I suggested you contact her. This is exactly the type of project our association likes to promote. I can also have some announcements made at our meetings. Also, my husband and I are going to be participating in the Baltimore Book Festival in a couple of weeks. If you have pdfs of any written material, we can hand copies of those out there.

I hope this helps.

All the best,
